Disc Golf Vault: 2014 PDGA World Championships – MPO Final 9

Tomorrow is August 1 and August means one thing in the disc golf world. Pro World Championships. This year Worlds, starting August 4th, descends upon Pittsburgh, PA. Last year, Worlds was held in Portland, OR and had one of, if not the, most exciting finishes to a tournament we’ve ever seen.

The previous 7 rounds display some of the best, and most exciting disc golf we’ve ever seen. I would highly recommend watching through the tournament from start to finish to fully understand the intensity of the moment, but for the sake of saving time let’s do exactly what you’re never supposed to do, jump straight to the finish. We pick up the 2014 World Championship at the start of the Final 9. The final foursome is Ricky Wysocki, 65 under par, Paul McBeth, 63 under par, Paul Ulibarri, 62 under par, and Nate Doss, 59 under par.

After leading for most of the tournament Paul Ulibarri had fallen off the lead handing it off to the battling McBeth and Wysocki. After a quadruple bogey during round 6, McBeth had all but handed the win to Wysocki. Heading into hole 15 of the 7th and final full round Ricky had a 5 stroke lead over Ulibarri and a 6 stroke lead over McBeth! The two Pauls said “enough is enough” and began their climb back to the top. Heading into the Final 9 Ulibarri had shrunk his deficit down to 2 with McBeth 1 behind him, and 3 back of Ricky in the lead.

While struggling to gain strokes and put away the rest of the field, does Ricky have it in him to hold off the charging Pauls, or will one, or both, of them steal the win from him? This is one of the most exciting finishes to a tournament in recent memory, if this doesn’t get you pumped up for the 2015 coming World Championships then I don’t know what will.

With Paul McBeth looking as dominant as ever, with Ricky Wysocki seeming to get back into his groove after struggling (relatively speaking), as well as a whole field of much improved players such as Jeremy Koling, Will Schusterick, Gregg Barsby, and many more we are surely in for another exciting World Championships.
