Nite Ize Flashflight LED Discs Review

While the idea of playing disc golf at night with glow discs or attaching some sort of LED onto your disc is available year round, it is much more common after the fall time change when daylight is harder to come by. The team at Nite Ize has one solution that truly produces some bright results. The Nite Ize Flashflight disc golf discs have an LED permanently attached to the bottom of the disc with a “fiber optic array” leading from the center of the disc to the rim to help illuminate the entire disc.

Nite Ize has a driver, midrange, and putter that can be bought as a set or individually:

Illuminate your quiver of discs and be the envy of your opponents with the perfected design and impressive LED power of the new Flashflight LED Disc Golf Discs. Your Driver, Mid-Range and Putter will shine as they blaze your path to victory, day or night. With the revolutionary Disc-o Select™ color selection feature, each player can select the LED color for their discs as they begin each round.

Designed by serious professionals and crafted from our unrivaled Sure-Grip™ material, these discs strike the perfect balance of power, stability, and performance. The Flashflight LED Disc Golf Discs are your soon-to-be favorites with the awesome perk of having the Nite Ize patented fiber-optic array that allows the entire disc to be illuminated from every angle. With easily replaceable batteries and an uber long LED life, now you can play as long as you’d like unrestrained by nightfall.

Nite Ize sent us a set of their Flashflight discs and we waited until the sun went down to head to the course to see how these not only performed in the air, but just how well the LEDs worked.

On the bottom of each disc you’ll find the LED housing with the battery and on-off switch. When you press the button once it will turn on the LEDs. This will begin a rotation of five colors: red, purple, blue, aqua, green, and white. You can press the button a second time to lock it into a color and it will remain there the entire time. If you don’t press it a second time, it will continue to rotate through colors. A third press will turn the LEDs off.

We found the every color to be pretty effective. Red, blue, green, and white, were our personal favorites, but they all worked.

The fiber optic array on the bottom wasn’t too distracting when trying to find a grip, but we did notice it. It wasn’t really a problem though, you will get used to it quickly. We had no trouble finding a strong power or fan grip on any of the discs.

Speaking of grip, the plastic these came in was similar to Innova’s Champion style plastic but a little on the softer side. We had quite a bit of grip and was actually a little surprised with just how much grip and control we had with the plastic.

As for the glow, we’ll admit, we were a little skeptical when we first got them, but these things really do shine. The fiber optic part helps illuminate all of the disc and you can really tell which color these are glowing as from a distance. When it’s right in front of you it almost looks like the entire disc is that color and not a white/glow color that has some LEDs with it. After our throws, we could easily see the LED in the middle of the disc with the illuminated ring around it.

While we’d love to have this technology on other discs that we have in our bag, we think the way Nite Ize sets the LEDs and fiber optic array really produces some great results. While it is hard to capture it on photos we think we’ve done the best job possible to show how the colors really do shine. They aren’t photoshopped or enhanced in any way. That was straight from our camera.

Thanks to Nite Ize for sending us a set of their Flashflight discs to check out. The LED elements of the disc produce results better than we expected. The found the right combination of technology and the true color of the disc to help produce the best canvas possible for the color.

Nite Ize Flashflight Driver

Nite Ize Flashflight

Along with the LED element of each disc, we did want to touch briefly on the flight of the three discs. The Nite Ize Flashflight Driver has a pretty good size rim on it which puts it at the higher end of the speed spectrum.

There is a little bit of a dome on the driver which is required to leave enough room for the LED housing under the disc. The midrange and putter are naturally deeper and have plenty of room to begin with.

The driver has a decent amount of turn to help you gain some distance, but is followed by a slightly stronger fade. We were able to get some small hyzer flips out of the driver or we could take a little power out of it and the start of the flight was pretty straight. There was quite a bit of control with the driver which was a nice feature, especially with the low light conditions.

At the end of the flight the fade would kick in with some late energy. We could rely on it to fade time and time again. It wasn’t anything too dramatic, but it always had that finish to it.

Overall, we’d give the Nite Ize Flashflight Driver flight ratings of 12, 4, -2, 2.5.

Nite Ize Flashflight Midrange

Nite Ize Flashflight

The Nite Ize Flashflight Midrange is a beadless midrange with a very moderate dome. It has almost a beadless-Roc type feel to it. It isn’t quite like a Buzzz or Wasp, but it sits right in between. The flight itself is very neutral.

It also has a little turn to it and isn’t the best disc into a headwind. That isn’t a negative feature, but worth noting. We were able to throw the midrange with various levels of power and could produce consistent flights with relatively straight lines.

The fade of the midrange was small, but it did want to finish to the left. Don’t expect any big hyzer finishes, but you’ll find a lot of control with the midrange.

Overall, we’d give the Nite Ize Flashflight Midrange flight ratings of 4, 4, -1, 1.

Nite Ize Flashflight Putter

Nite Ize Flashflight

The Nite Ize Flashflight Putter was the most stable of all three discs. We were actually surprised with just how stable it was at high speeds. The driver and midrange could barely fight a headwind and flipped pretty easily, but the putter fought the headwind with ease and didn’t show any signs of turn.

We could really put some power behind it and it was quite stable. There was a a little fade at the end, but nothing too dramatic. It reminded us quite a bit of the Discmania P2.

The putter is also beadless, but has a larger flat area on the very bottom of the rim that we were a little surprised by.

Inside the circle, just go right for the chains with this one. You don’t have to play a very big fade or watch for a high amount of glide.

Overall, we’d rate the Nite Ize Flashflight Putter at 2, 3, 0, 1.
